The Universe Doesn't Do Math

Reality never calculates; it just is in a state, and that state is already the answer.

The one thing to take away: the universe never works out an answer — it simply is the answer.

Think about a tree. It grows tall, and its branches spread out just right. But the tree never does any math. It doesn't measure. It doesn't add up numbers. It just grows — and it comes out right.

A river is the same. It runs down a hill and finds the perfect path to the bottom. But the river never stops to figure it out. It just flows. The path it takes is the answer — and it never had to solve anything.

Look around. Nothing in nature stops to do math.

Nothing out there is "doing the math"

We think the world must be solving problems behind the scenes — like there's a tiny calculator hidden inside everything. There isn't. A seed doesn't count. A planet doesn't measure its path around the sun. They just are what they are. And being what they are is enough.

What looks to us like a hard problem is, to the world, not a problem at all. The thing is simply there, shaped the way it's shaped. And that shape already holds everything a calculation could tell us.

The answer is already sitting there

When you do math homework, the answer comes at the end, after all the work. So we start to think answers always cost work. But the world doesn't work that way.

A thing's size, its shape, where it sits — that's already the whole answer. Nothing is left to figure out. It's right in front of you, the whole time.

We got it backwards

In school we learn that to know something, you have to work it out. Step by step. That's what "doing math" means to most people. But the universe never works anything out, and it's never wrong.

So maybe working it out is the slow way. Maybe the smart move isn't to solve the answer — it's to learn how to read it. That's what this whole book is about.
