The Living State

A thing's present state carries its whole story — its spirit. Read the state, know the truth.

The one thing to take away: the current state already holds the whole history — you read it, you don't replay it.

Look at an old tree stump. See the rings? Each ring is one year the tree was alive. You can count them and know exactly how old the tree was. You didn't have to watch it grow for a hundred years. The rings are right there, holding the whole story.

That's a big idea: the way a thing is right now holds everything that ever happened to it.

The now carries the past

A scar on your knee remembers the day you fell. A melted candle remembers how long it burned. A worn-down step remembers every foot that ever walked on it. Nobody wrote any of it down. The story is just... in them — in how they are now.

Let's give that carried-up story a name: the thing's spirit. It's everything that ever changed the thing, still inside it, right now.

Read it — don't live it all over again

Say you want to know a thing's whole story. You've got two choices.

You could go back to the very beginning and watch every single thing happen again, all the way up to now. That would take forever. That's the slow way.

Or you could just look at the thing the way it is now and read its story straight off — like counting tree rings. The now already holds the answer. You don't have to replay the past. You just read what the past left behind.
